Why kinesiology is great for kids
I often get asked about kinesiology for kids, and how it works. So I thought I’d write a blog post explaining how kinesiology works for kids, and some of the reasons why I think it is such a GREAT modality for children.
If you’ve had kinesiology before, or you’re familiar with how it works, you might be wondering how the muscle testing works with kids. And there are quite a few options! If your child is 2 years or older, most of the time - with their cooperation - I can show them how the muscle testing works and then do the session just like I would for an adult. If the child is under 2 years, or just isn’t ready or willing to let me muscle test on them, I can use something called surrogate testing. It’s the same as what I use when I do online/distance sessions. So the muscle testing is done on someone else, for the child. Depending on the age and needs of the child, I might use you, the parent, and do the muscle testing on your arm. Or I might use my own hand for muscle testing. And often, it’s a combination of all of these things when I’m working with a child.
This means that even if the child is willing to lie on the massage table for half of the session, I can then use surrogate testing on either the parent or on myself to complete the session.
Sessions with kids are super fun and all about adapting to what they need in the session. And every session will be different for every child. Some sessions, your child might be happy to lie down for a short amount of time or for the whole session. Some sessions, your child might be running around the room while I muscle test myself, and any remedies or balances I need to do on them I can make into a fun game to get their attention.
It’s so important that you know: your child is NOT expected to lie down for a one hour session with me. Especially the little ones - it’s just way too much for them. And of course, when we are working with the nervous system it’s so important that they feel safe and free to move in the way they want to. I’m a mum of 3, and I totally get how kids work. I make it my mission to play games with your child, capture their curiosity, and make the session super fun for them.
And the more fun they have, the more open their energy is, which means the more impact each session will have, which means faster results for them.
The other thing worth noting with kinesiology when it comes to kids is this: rather than a traditional therapy model where the child is expected to express their feelings and talk about things, kinesiology works with the body and nervous system more than the mind. This means your child doesn’t have to talk about anything at all if they don’t want to. It means they don’t have to make sense of anything, or understand their emotions perfectly, or re-live anything that feels traumatic for them. Kinesiology allows me to heal and release from the body and mind without talking about things over and over again. And that can be such a gift for children who either a) aren’t old enough to make sense of things yet or b) aren’t willing or ready to talk about them.
Kinesiology works on all levels of health - so physical symptoms, emotional regulation, mental health and energetic wellbeing are all able to be balanced in a kinesiology session. Kids are naturally open to energy work when they feel safe and comfortable, and because of this openness we often see really fast results after sessions. As a general rule (but there is always an exception!) kids don’t need anywhere near as many appointments as adults too, because their bodies respond much faster to the nervous system and energetic work of kinesiology.
